Oscar. His photos have
always put me in mind of
Clark Gable. He
certainly knew how to
pose for a picture and
seems to have a good
sense of how he wanted
to be seen.

All the Buttner children enjoyed being in front of a camera so it seems. You can tell
they liked to dress up and pose. You just get a sense that they were not the wilting
violet kind of people. It's lucky for us that they did because their photos tell us so
much about the time during which they lived....the clothes they wore, their
hairstyles, even the cars they drove. How could they afford all these photos during
the depression era, you ask? We'll never know except that they thought the cost,
whatever it may have been, of preserving their memories was worth it.
Born six months after his father Harvey died
unexpectedly from a heart attack, Leo was
Gertrudis' baby. He says he was very close to his
mother and sister Rosa. Even today in 2009, Rosa
only lives a few miles from him in Oxnard, CA..
Still spearheading the
reunions that are held
yearly, the Provencio clan
(along with the Munoz,
Pedroza families) have met
each summer for the past
35 years. And now the
Robles ,thanks to
Gertrudis, meet with
them also.
Gertrudis married Harvey Buttner when she was in her late 20's in 1907.
Harvey was in his 30's so they were not exactly spring chickens, for the
time, when it came to starting a family as large as theirs would be. Their
fourth child Cecilia died in infancy. The other six-Ida, Eva, Oscar, Luisa,
Rosa, Leo-have lived to ripe old ages with families of their own. In fact,
as of July 2009 Rosa, "Rosita" is a very spry, mentally lively 92 year old, still
attending the annual family reunion and other family gatherings.

Who has the original of this
photo? I would love to borrow it. This
is a paper copy of the photo that I got
from Maggie Robles Martinez. That
accounts for it's lack of quality. Still a
great photo that shows Refugio
Robles Burrola, her aunt Gertrudis,
her uncle Rafael, and the woman who
raised her, her aunt Eulogia. The little
girl in the front is Dorothy Buttner,
granddaughter of Gertrudis.
